Participation Trophies

article image placeholderUploaded by @FryedOreo
And for some people, the competing is the fun part, whereas for other people, the experience of playing the sports is the fun part. And I've been on both sides on the team. I've been on teams where a lot of the people were just having fun. This was not something they wanted to do professionally or even wanted to play that much at all in their family lives

Necessary evil or just Unnecessary?

No trophy for me.

And sports, athletics in general can prepare you for what the real life is going to give you. In the real world, 20 people go into the office, and only one person leaves with a promotion. The other 19 don't. You can give them all the trophies they want, but they are not going forward in their company and moving forward in their job

So I did the cross country portion of track, and I loved it. Now I had the endurance. I was not the fastest. I always came in last place. And I remember my 8th grade year, my 7th grade year when they had the awards banquet, I didn't win anything, and I was down on myself about that, but it's part of life, right? And so I remember Coach Jones was her name. Beautiful woman. Remember feeling down about that

Because our son made the 17th grandchild 16 nieces and nephews. And we were like the cool aunt and uncle that the preteen and teen nieces and nephews wanted to spend the weekend with. And sometimes we would let them stay over if we didn't have anything to do. And he was hardcore on them. So when we decided to get pregnant and we were blessed with our son, I just thought, I'm definitely going to have to be the nurturer in the dynamic here because I know he goes hard

So a participation trophies was I never got a participation trophy, but I remember all my trophies. They would misspell my first name often. But yeah, sports. It's obviously a big part of American life growing up. You're going to be involved in some sports or maybe the avoidance of sports

Dewan this was always one of the most debated questions when we discussed what the fees for the league should be and what that was going to encompass. And the idea of trophies would always come up. And I can give you my perspective from from coaching and leading sports, sports youth sports organizations for the past 13 years

He liked the sports and he was my coach and everything, but he was kind of abusive to my mom, so that didn't work out, too. But, yeah, the participation trophies at the lower I get it. The little a** kids. Yeah, they're double dribbling the whole time traveling. Like, just give them a trophy. They're probably not going to forget that they played basketball at all

How far do we go? #sports #kids

I apologize for not knowing the user's name that said that they were involved in you sports and they only gave participation for the first year. And then they turn into basically a hyper competitive and spend thousands of dollars running across the country developing these super teams. So let's talk a little bit about what they're doing now. And I'm only going to speak for baseball baseball just because I just experienced this not even a couple of months ago

Because there's a certain air of elitism with that sort of play. Like you're talking about the Little League World Series and whatnot, and you're looking at basically the top players that are going to be playing the sports in the coming years. Even then, not many of those make it. I can't tell you sometimes it's a fun pastime of mine. I will look at prep sports like basketball

No, you should recognize those who stand out noticeably, who've gotten their work done on time early, who have gone above and beyond for clients, who have held the organization to a higher standard, who have supported other employees. But when they take the mindset of who hasn't been recognized in a while, it became comedic to go into like, a quarterly awards recognition. They would call these people up and award them, and the people around the room would actually laugh

That's why I'm here. But yeah, some people, it doesn't matter what it is, they'll be late or they'll call off or they'll do a no call, no show, et cetera. So, yeah, I'm wondering about that. And in terms of sports, our participation trophies geared towards making the faculty of that sport that they organize and fund to make them look good for pitcher day, so to speak

Where do we say, well, yeah, there is no participation trophies anymore, and then now we are looking at consoling or having to discuss with our kids why, hey, I know you've gotten the participation trophies the last two years, but now you don't get them anymore. And this kid goes, once. That stinks. I thought we were getting those. That's the only reason I kept on playing

So we're going to give you an award. You were hired to come to work and they hired you to come to work every day. So when you do what you're supposed to do, you're going to get an award. That's where we're at. And I know that happens all over

And if you happen to win and you're doing it the right way, that's great. That's great, too. But especially in team sports, you're only going to be as good as your team allows you to be. I think there are some parents that get that

Then there are people that don't need any of that, and it's like almost like silent communication that they're doing their thing, and the person appreciates that, but you just don't need to be communicated that all the time. And that can be aspects of parenting as well. Right?

And I think that's where the good coaching comes from. So I remember Isaiah Thomas, he talked about that, his basketball coach. It was more about life. He was teaching you. Basketball is kind of secondary. And that's how they became so good. In a way, it all depends on coaches and how they apply the craft of mentoring these young minds to be better than they were yesterday, because that's what it's really about

Quick reply- participation certificate!

I'm just gonna throw this quick reply out here. This is Carrie at Country Swell, and that I'm definitely not about trophies and shiny medals and awards for general purpose participation. But what I am okay and comfortable with is a participation certificate, an award on a piece of paper that fits nicely in the photo album that lets those younger kids kind of just walk away with something saying, I participated in this team because I'm a member of a team. They're recognizing the importance of this

@FryedOreo: winning is waning…

I learned from that not only what my weaknesses were or the things that I struggled with, which sports wasn't my, that wasn't my draw. I got the short stick on sports stuff. But I will say that my intellect became a source, sort of a bane of my existence. And so I started getting into things like chess club where I would win, and I got into the debate club and I would win debates and I stepped away from sports and developed a healthy relationship with intellectual sparring

And I remember the kids, man, they will cry, they will tear up. And these were the best players, but they were serious about the game. They were like, hey, we want to train even harder. And it made them better ball players, because the ones that were good on the team, they were ball hoggers

And maybe when we focus too much on the sport at hand and we don't take lessons from it to incorporate it to our lives, it's probably where we ultimately lose. As you had said, winning is waning. There are people out there who now work in department stores, who are mechanics, who are McDonald's employees, but they did win that high school championship and scored an amazing 60 points, right? They scored 60 points. They're Al Bundy's out there, right?

We getting everybody off the court. Yes, man. Thank you for responding to the swell. And I thought it was interesting, too, that you actually watched basketball, because I know your secret for how much you love the sport. Your a** never watched it. But that's what always made it even more amazing at your talent on the court, for you not watching the sport at all in recreation. You totally seem to understand it intuitively. Thanks for the response

You have people that put a little bit more effort into it, and you have people doing the bare minimum. And I think that correlates to participation. Trophies. I was a bit of an athlete in high school as well. I did a lot of basketball and primarily soccer. We didn't have football because my school had a pretty horrific accident, and so they pretty much banned football
