I love The Askewniverse!

So I'm assuming Miramax had some sort of deal with HBO back in the day. I don't know if they're somehow related in terms of ownership. I noticed a couple of his films are on HBO. Max, I actually want to rewatch Dogma, one of my favorite films, especially at the time where I was beginning to question religion and whatnot. So I just like his films. So I'm curious, what do you guys think about his films in his universe? Oddball quirky independent filmmaking

What do you think of Kevin Smith’s filmology? #movies #film

I thought it was funny because I used to hang out at the mall. I got where he was going with that. But you could see his influences in his films and the man's knowledgeable on film. I read some of his books. He knows his s*** about film, and I give him credit. Man. He's tapped into some of the different genres in the film, and he's only getting better

I’m probably the biggest secretive film fan ever! 😆 @NealD

That, to me almost sometimes rivals the actual end result of the films themselves, where I can just sit down and listen to these guys talk about filmmaking in their process like it was a movie. There's another YouTube channel called Film Courage, where it talks about the process up and coming movie producers, directors and writers, screenwriters as well as even some actors. So yeah, that's another thing, too. That occupies a lot of my time

I mean, if you think of Pulp Fiction, you immediately think of Royale with Cheese, right? And if you think of Clerks, you think of things like where their janitors on the Death star, that kind of stuff. And these meaningless kinds of conversations ridiculousness. Usually everything in the script was designed to drive the film forward, whereas these films were introducing moments. That was just the way guys talk when they hang out, just dumb s*** that they say

But again, I think it all sort of lends itself to the conversation of maybe he's less of a filmmaker now than he was. That being said, I love the guy. I'll pretty much listen to him talk at any moment that I can. And when a film of his comes out, I'll certainly watch it

And then he made the announcement that the old video store will now be their cannabis store in New Jersey, which is pretty cool. And then the rest of the building is the Smart Castle Podcast Studios now. And the Quick Stop is still there. So kind of a really cool story that the clerk who worked in that Quick Stop now owns the g****** thing because of a film he made about being there. And it really, really interesting story

The fan and the filmmaker. @AverageJoe and @Taylor

But I think Kevin Smith was more a fan of film, not in the sense of like he's watching a lot of French films and things of that nature, but in Italian films. But he probably watched a majority of American films and also too another story. Well, to tie that off, I think within the first crop of films he did for his Ask universe. It was fresh, young voice that you just didn't see in Hollywood all that much

@Wuandurful

Kevin Smith just wanted to make films that kind of spoke to the generation that resonated with well, as I was just talking about on my own swell Gen X, that kind of thing. So I think that is the difference. I don't think Smith ever set out to be what Tarantino was. I don't think he has the knowledge that type of artistry in filmmaking that Tarantino does

Good points you brought up @AverageJoe

He had did a comic books stint with Batman. It was like a limited series. It was like called Cacophony or something. Cacophony. I forget what it was called, but it was interesting, to say the least, because obviously Kevin Smith has a big background in comic books, so he knows his comic books. But yeah, the story was really bad. He was like, what the h*** is this?

I've seen his one man show at New York Comic Con. Really cool guy is great to his fans, and he just understands being a fan of film. And I think that's great. He doesn't have an ego. Like a lot of directors. He's coming from a point of being a fan that became a director

And I think that's one of the greatest things about him. And I recommend you guys read his books. They're really funny. And he tells just some great stories in his books. So I'll always be a Kevin Smith fan. And I'll listen to his podcast and continue to watch his films

Yeah. Joe, to reply to your Tarantino and Smith reply. I always said Kevin Smith was watching Fast Times at Ridge, Jamie High and John Hughes films. And Quentin Tarantino was watching A Woman Under the Influence and Breathless of Robbers. So you have two different influential perspectives. And it shows in their films, obviously. So yeah. Solid point
