Can Labels Harm Us?

article image placeholderUploaded by @FryedOreo
I've noticed a growing trend of those who were once in a dark place by certain labels. Some diagnosed and given to them that they now have turned into content. There's podcasts for autism. There are podcasts for psychopathy, there are podcasts for schizophrenics, schizophrenia. You name it. There is a culture for it. Even INTJ. I've met some cool people via the INTJ hashtag on Instagram alone. That alone. Also on YouTube. Labels are great identifiers that unite

Are we many things or only one thing?

Well and then at one point, I want to say a couple of years later, I learned the word ambivert, A-M-B-I-V as in Victor E-R-T. And it was like someone who wears both hats well and flex between being an introvert and extrovert well. And I was like, okay, well, that's me. I'm an ambivert and flex. I've led teams. At one point, I had 135 people reporting to me on my last role, and they too didn't believe me

I work harder just to make sure that he is not perceived wrong, but also with the understanding that I can't control what society is going to view him as. And so working harder in the sense of empowering him to show up and stand up for himself and speak up for himself and assert himself and to, again, even as a teenager, recognizing his cues of things that he can do, to focus more and speak up for his needs

He's not a one to one ratio of stereotypes that's associated with kids who have autism. So that's another thing in its own regard where some people can think, oh, so he must do this, he must do that. No, he doesn't do that. No, he doesn't have mathematical equations in his head. He'll randomly say, no, that's not how he is. Like, you're watching movies, brah

@Joshawah dont fall in love with your afflictions!

But no, yours is unique. Your nature and nurture is different. It's different, and that's a good thing. You don't want to be exactly like any case study, because you can't even if it's been professionally diagnosed, you are still you a unique individual. And yeah, it's great sometimes to talk with people who go through the same afflictions as you, and you get a group going, a Facebook group going, all that stuff. That's cool

And so I said, okay, you know what? I'm going out of town this weekend. And this was back when he was diagnosed. I think at that point, he was six, because my father was still alive then. So six. And so she said, we'll keep them for the weekend. So I packed them up. I put his medication in the Ziploc bag because I knew she was going to church, and she wanted him to go with her

But when it comes to autism, I want to expand the complexity and nuance and create a greater awareness. And so I do talk about it, but also hoping that there will be better understanding of the nuance and complexity that is me. Because instead of just shoving me in a corner of quote unquote weird or whatever other label or decision, someone says they think about me. Because it's easier to address that than it is to say

My first experience with raising a kid was one who had autism, so later on with his siblings, when they came along, I had such a varied experience that it allowed me to kind of be very calm in situations where maybe other people would have been more crazed about it or have more anxiety about it. I mean, I have a kid who at one point had speech delay and it's just et cetera, et cetera, et cetera

And thankfully, we're in a time where they've been able to be diagnosed at a young age, as opposed to, unfortunately in your situation. But I guess in some ways it's a great situation that you have been diagnosed so late. Yeah, I actually remember on Anchor there was a girl, I'm not going to say her name, but she had said she was autistic

Yeah, I feel that we do use labels on others and it can harm them. Labeling can harm you, especially if it's not a I was going to say positive label, but there are some negative labels. Some negative labels can gain you a lot of fortune. But yeah, man, it's funny. You're INTJ. So you're basically I wonder if you and bruce Wayne Batman I wonder you, bruce wayne Batman. And Walter white and Gus, they're all INTJ

So you have to kind of err bit with the side of caution with it because its main application as far as MBTI was for, like, jobs and s***, only later that people use it in casual circles to which it's kind of up there. With astrology. It's like when you look at somebody's dating personnel or dating profile, there's an off chance you might see their MBTI. Occasionally I'll see a woman will display their MBTI. There more

Especially in a larger cultural way is I do feel like there's a shift for them. Especially when it comes to mental health and things like that. For it to be more empowering and like seeking pumps that's almost like used as a tool for understanding and a gateway but no longer in a pathologizing way. So like when I was a kid and I was given these diagnoses I felt like it was very much handled as though like something was wrong with me. Like I was sick and oh my gosh

But what happens when a term such as neurodivergent, which is not something you get diagnosed as, gets taken up upon someone who actually is not neurodivergent, at least not within its original meaning, but they come to use it as a way of making them different and not typical. But it doesn't actually mean that they have autism. And they would be surprised if you told them they had. Do you suffer from autism or do you have not suffer, but do you have autism or ADHD?

I think that's related to cults in the sense that you look at cult leaders and they are all people who understand and take advantage of the human desire to feel a sense of connection and community to others and to be able to identify confidently with having a sense of self within that group and having a place. And I think that's something that we all need to be wary of

So I think labels can definitely harm us. Obviously, it's they're we need them in the sense that it's important to know what you're dealing with and like things that you have, but also, I think, feel like they do have harm. I have been getting mental health treatment since I was 15, and I'm 20 now, and I've been re diagnosed with some pretty serious mental illnesses, like, three times now

Isabella, thank you so much for adding to this conversation. And also, thank you for being a bit vulnerable with us and sharing that you indeed were diagnosed with the of mental disorders and how it impacted your overall viewpoint of yourself. Yes, labels are great ways of shorthand to talk about aspects of us in hopes of connection or even a bit more understanding
