Acting: The First Step

article image placeholderUploaded by @FrankBishop
I'd say a good person to get it from would be Jean Benedetti, I think was his name. He translated them very well. And Stanislavsky was pleased with those, I believe, or his work at the time when he was alive. UDA Haagen is another one. Udohagen's respect for acting, I think she has another one called Challenge for the Actor that she wrote because she was bothered by the way actors were doing her exercises in her first book. Read them both. Read both of them

The first step I took to begin my acting career. #ActingJourney #ThespianLife #TheaterArts #Art #Motivation #Inspiration

And with the applied theater work that I do, it's really being able to work with anybody using theater and that everyone has the ability to be creative and perform and it brings so much joy, even if you're not even doing it for a career. It's my life. It's a huge part of my life. So I just really love this advice. And also the books. I was thinking when you started talking about books, I was like, oh, that's it

It was so gratifying to just be creative in that space with other performers and other people that were just trying to get out of their comfort zone. So definitely improv classes. I like how you were talking about working. Theater helps you work with anyone and that's what it is because it's always a collaborative effort. You're always working with other people that you cannot work with other people in theater unless you're doing a monologue and you're still working with your professor

Hey, it's JL. The information you shared in this wellcast fire and spot on. I marvel at synchronicities. Not that they've just started to exist, they've always been there. And I'm just in a different space where I can be aware and more mindful of when that is happening and pausing and just seeing what is next. And I say all that to say because I had a thought earlier about not allowing myself to sabotage my efforts, including if that's someone if me

So you self sabotage, to use one of the words you used in your recording there or your post. We self sabotage, and I've done it before many times over the course of my life. We self sabotage to not have to face that fear, but then we still end up unhappy, which is like a double edged sword that we created for ourselves for no reason

And I love film, too, and I've done like, little shoots here and there, but, yeah, the theater performing has always stuck with me. But I appreciate you responding back and yeah, I can't wait to listen to more of yourself

Love hearing your passion!

Frank, love hearing about your journey to becoming an actor. This is wonderful stuff. I want to share a little bit of my perspective. I was an undergraduate theater major for a while. I got my undergraduate degree in performance studies and was able to make a living as an actor for about educational theater for about eight years and then pivoted into into education and administration and fundraising. And I still perform, but not doing theater

So I'm 100% with you on that. Fortunately, I'm fortunate to not have had or seen any of these situations arise so far. I mean, there was one where there was a play, and I forgot the name of it, to be honest. But there was a play that was supposed to happen, and it was for musical theater. I'm not a musical theater major, but it was for musical theater, and it was something about diversity
