I just got diagnosed with IBS: The psychological toll of having a chronic illness

article image placeholderUploaded by @emilie_vayner
Or maybe you still haven't figured it out and you're still not feeling better. Trust me. I understand you and I hear you because it is just so frustrating and a lot of people break down IBS to the stereotypical going to the bathroom a lot. Your stomach hurts a lot. I'm so sorry. That sucks. When in reality, it causes so many mental symptoms. The fatigue that I've experienced through having this gastrointestinal disorder is horrible

Hope you guys enjoy this talk! This is something that means a lot to me and if you’re struggling with chronic illness ❤️ #wellness #gut #healthy #swell

So now I'm stuck with this term and I have to continue seeing a rheumatologist and taking more tests and just seeing what works for me. I'm actually still mind blown and so appreciative that you posted this because I feel like it's the universe confirming to me that I have IBS. But we're in this together and I understand what you're going through, and it's really annoying and really tough and frustrating, but there will be that day where we get definite answers

Hey, Emily, I'm really sorry that you're dealing with this. I totally relate to it. I did the low FODMAP diet for quite some time, and I started integrating stuff back into my diet. And I think ultimately, I determined that Gluten was the most serious irritant out of the bunch. I enjoy a drink every now and then, and I love spicy foods. So those are two things that obviously if I cut those out as well, I would see a world of improvement

Oh, my goodness. This is the best reply I could have honestly hoped for in posting this. And, yeah, you're so right. The timing on this app can be so crazy. I'm so, so sorry to hear what you're going through, and I really, really understand, trust me, not just with the IBS, but chronically in general. I couldn't imagine having to not only deal with one, but, like, three chronic illnesses or more

And also, like, not congratulations is not at all all the right word, but I'm happy for you that you've been able to find a diagnosis so that you can kind of start treating your IBS and, like, however feels best for you and really start trying to address some of the more debilitating symptoms of it. For me. I'm trans and I have PCOS polycystic ovary syndrome. And for years and years and years, I had no idea what was wrong

So my appetite was just like the switch was just turned off for months and it wasn't really even a choice. It didn't feel like so I feel like when you have to go through health conditions that affect your relationship with food and food being like a basic survival piece, it just adds, like, a really big extra layer of stress to your life. So I can relate to that and the fatigue and just trying to manage your mental and cognitive capacities in a school setting

Thank you so much for replying and sharing. And this is truly the exact result I wanted from starting this conversation. Just seeing how many people really have so much to say about this really reiterates the fact that chronic illness is not talked about about enough. And this community really needs to be brought together. And what you touched on with relationships with food is so true and something I didn't touch on, but it's something that is very personal to me

@emilie_vayner @tremaine Have you tried acupuncture?

We couldn't figure anything out. We had no answers. So I really had nothing left to lose but to start exploring these alternative therapies, and it worked for me. And I can't tell you how. I can't tell you why it worked. I can just tell you that it worked. And we figured it out. We got answers. I'm still taking care of myself today to make sure that that doesn't come back

It has been really effective in improving my posture, my back pain, my headaches, my TMJ issues in my jaw, and generally just feeling much more comfortable in my body. So I just wanted to share that therapy. It's not something I've heard talked about by many people, and I do think it could be beneficial for a number of different conditions. And so thank you again, Phil, for dropping the Acupuncture recommendation
