Now the Shamstakes itself is a relatively new stakes race. The first one was in 2001. So this is really only a 20 year old race, which makes it one of the younger prep races for the Kentucky Derby. Now, even though it is a relatively young race, it has produced a lot of great horses

He's had these horses that have run very well. So when he does actually have horses in here, you have to pay attention. He's not one to rush a horse. So, you know, the horses are ready. And another thing about John Sheriffs is you can't tell too much race to race. He's a consummate teacher and he's really trying to teach a horse something in a race, and they often will be at high odds and often times

Now, that's really tough to kind of compare times there on a year basis. But it was a fast race. He did run fast, and there's just a lot of mixed things to see here whether Mike Smith just didn't keep the horse's attention gauge. And also, it's really not fair to be so critical of a three year old horse making his first run around two turns and only a second lifetime start. So we are a little critical

This race was at a mile, so I'd like to see him get the distance here before we start, stamping him as a sure shot Derby contender. But I think we have to put them on the list here. And I'm putting him as a horse to watch here for the future
