Black Cannabis Owners in a Post-Legalization World: How Incarceration Persists Despite Progress

article image placeholderUploaded by @DBPardes
There are so many ways to approach a conversation that I'm about to have with Moore Stringer and Cynthia Monpoint, and I'm choosing to speak to them through the lens of Black History Month because they are a husband and wife team. They are black, they are in the cannabis industry, and Moore is a selfdescribed survivor of the war on drugs

I don't classify that as victimization, but some people will try to shame you for not talking about it. But I think the exact opposite needs to happen. I think people need to talk about it and hear the stories of what this was all about

And just take us right there in those early days. And I know you're early days now because you're launching this great product, but before this box became into, it became something we could hold and say, here's a product. There's a lot of steps before that. So take us back to those moments. I'm really interested. Thank you

Thank you for working so hard to make sure that this medicine does not go away, because it really does feel like marijuana and psychedelics are kind of like the last little hints and clues of what humans are really capable of doing. We've only experienced what we can do with our physical bodies, and it's great

I was 23, 22 when I really started reading and getting into these spiritual systems and finding these great teachers. And so Shakti was my introduction to the Hindu systems which I love and adore Buddhism, Hinduism. These are systems where you kind of just pass through, you learn the lessons and you pass through and you adopt these things to your life and you live your life through these systems. It's really cool

You have this thing when we look at under these microscopes, these powerful microscopes, you have this thing that's not obeying the universal laws that it's holding into structure for us. So that shows us that these universal laws gravity, everything else like that, that we're dealing with only pretty much pertain to this realm time and all of these things. But, yeah. Yes

I had a couple of early stints around my college years with testing the plan, if you will, but never really got into consuming, mainly because when I finally figured out how to get the feel, the therapeutic benefits, if you will, I was a certified teacher, and it was illegal. And so I wasn't going to jeopardize the very important work that I was doing just to consume the plant

And then in your experience as a mother giving birth, I feel like I want to do a whole other swell on the female body and cannabis and the experience of being a woman who is pregnant and needing to make some decisions around using a form of this to help with that process. It seems complicated and important, and I think it probably deserves its own conversation, so definitely putting a pin in that

And the data is even more alarming when we start to look at black and brown entrepreneurs and business owners in this space who get to the point of being operational. And so when want

But doing so really has the power to do a lot of good in many ways. Not just in terms of the healing aspects of the plant or the therapeutic aspects of the plant, but I'm really making changes in how we do things in general as a society

Cynthia, I really enjoyed the framing of this conversation and your response, and I'm really interested in the access points for people to understand what they can do to feel their sense of agency and being protected by laws to help guide their own entrepreneurship. Are there resources that you can point to, or are you the person they should be talking with in conversation about this? Because I feel like there's a lot of silos happening
