SPEAK UP WHEN YOU’RE DOWN | Mental Health Awareness Month #AskSwell

article image placeholderUploaded by @DBPardes
I think mostly I feel like there's safety here and there's acceptance, and there's a lot of real human beings who are having moments just like mine. So keep on speaking up when you're down it's Mental Health Awareness Month in May around the world, but I would like to offer the idea that we are always aware of mental health here. We have dedicated a station to it

But thank you for that, because I'm go big or go home, and patience is a virtue which I do not have patience. So, yes, I've had my podcast equipment for a year, and I have dabbled with it. So I take accountability that I have and published anything yet. Thank you

I had a really heavy week last week, essentially having the rug pulled out from underneath of me and I reverted back to old coping mechanisms, which is, I got this, I can do it. I'm strong, I'm resilient, I can continue pushing forward, and sometimes that leads to burnt out. So I've kept quiet about the issues that I'm facing this past week and haven't really voiced them to anyone. And I don't think that stumbling upon this was by accident

And you talk about the experience of having a storied past where as an indigenous person, you feel like you have guides and you have people that are asking you to show up in such a magnificent way. Sometimes the pressure is very intense and I think that that has its own parallel universe of like, oh my God, I'm only human. I want to do a million things, but let me just take a breath

And I think one thing with mental health and mental health awareness, just sharing stories and talking can really help. And I think one thing that Many people, I think, refuse to align with or realize that I think mental health is the story of us all. I think that we all have these highs and Lows, these peaks and valleys, and they can manifest in ways that may be considered mental illness

Hey, Theo. Thank you for saying this and staying so personal. And I specifically feel so committed to the experience of veterans dealing with trauma, dealing with immersing themselves in society, integration, the gentle space that any veteran might need, because it's such a wide landscape of experiences that some people don't understand. And I just appreciate your humor and your capacity to be so deep and also so fun. So I'm happy that you can reflect on its impact on your mental health

Hey, it's Theo again. Yeah, this is a place where aforementioned, it's not necessarily about looking for the answers because it's so great how one pose can create this conversation. That can be very illuminating for some people as to how they deal with certain things, especially mental health

Hi, Deborah. Thank you so much for sharing this post. I must congratulate you, dear, on the brilliant and the powerful initiative that is taken by you and your team. Kudos to your effort. Kudos to your team for providing these people with a platform where they can raise their voice. They no longer have to suffer in silence. It's so important that people realize it, that mental health is as important as any other kind of health

Kola I would love to know more about your heritage. I would love maybe if you speak more about those things and help us to understand how to be able to communicate and to encourage each other. I think we would be cool friends. Nice to meet you, Kalola

So I feel like if you know someone well enough to know they need to speak up because they feel in some type of way, I think you need to press it a little bit harder than just saying, how are you feeling today? Are you okay? No. You should say what's on your mind. I see something's on your mind. So do you feel we should talk about it?

I don't need other people to validate my existence, and I can't control them. So why do I allow myself to be worked up to a situation where it makes me depressed or makes me sick when I am battling something that I physically and mentally and emotionally can't control? All I can control is my own response to those situations and my own reactions to those situations. And once you kind of realize that that all you can control is yourself, it makes living this life so much easier

Hey, Nicole, thank you so much for, I don't know, just speaking your truth, as you always do. You always drop me into that space of, like, listen deep because you're going to hear something. I also was so affected by that song. You shared it with me, I think, a month ago. And I want to just post it here for everybody. It is nine minutes of absolute, raw. Real artistry at its best. Best. Here you go

So what I ended up doing to make myself feel safe is I made sure that the account that I set up to be private has a completely separate email, isn't attached to my phone number, not under my name. I got creative with it and I actually am finding creative ways to not even show my face. So I am creatively expressing my message without my identity attached to it

Myself and my families have all dealt with mental illness, and I've also been blessed for the last 26 years to work for a nonprofit, Leland Family Ministries, who serve people that are in jail, prisons, and rehabs that are coming out, and some have gotten sober but are still walking out their mental health journey. And it's just been a blessing all these years to come alongside those that aren't even really sure why they feel the way they feel

Hey, Libby. I want to just thank you for your thoughts and for the work that you do. A lot of people don't get a chance to do direct service, and I know what a blessing it is to be able to do that service and not just think about it
