PUSH MY BUTTONS : pulling back the curtain on user interface design with Tiziana D’agostino

article image placeholderUploaded by @DBPardes
How many iterations did it go through before it landed on the app that I'm using right now? This is interesting stuff. There is something about the psychology of user interface design that is really about knowing how people behave at any given moment and interface with a particular application or screen. We're going to have this conversation with Tiziana Dagostino, and we're going to focus on her area of expertise, which is understanding who is being designed for and how coders wrap their heads around the who

You're welcome. Thank you for having me. So I would say that there is not one particular event that pushed me, but kind of more like a series of events. I got really interested in persuasion and how to persuade people with your design skills. And I think that was kind of the start. I always loved psychology, but for the first time I saw how psychology is so important in your their experience

How do you make sure it is the right vision? And when do you know you're ready to go and say use this button or use this screen or use this whatever the interface is because I'm sure it's iteration, iteration, iteration and testing and testing. What's that process like? How do you teach people to have the confidence to know when they should stick to their guns and say this is the right interface?

You're trying to get as close as possible to this ideal. And you know that because you're doing testing with real customers. So the crucial part is to figure it out from the beginning what problem you're really trying to solve and at that point you can come up with ideas and solution and design and there is not one perfect way to do it

That sounds totally logical. You have to iterate but there's a point where you have to commit. And I know what you're talking about. When you see companies that change things all the time, it just it's not very professional and it really shows that they came out of the gate maybe a little too early. But I love the process you're describing, which really includes so many different aspects of a holistic system, which I think is so important

As far as my involvement with ethical design, I guess it's been like many years in the making. Obviously every one of us have their own ethical values. But I feel that as I learn more and more about design and more and more about persuasion and how easy it is to, quote, unquote, manipulate people and kind of persuade them to do what you wanted to do, the more I learned that, the more I realized how important it is to do it in an ethical way

You can speak to that as well. Wow. I didn't even know that was a thing. I want to talk about this documentary I've been watching on Netflix about bias, about coded bias. I bet you're very passionate about AI and the implicit bias in AI by who designs AI. But from your end on the front end of things, to the extent that the app will be more acknowledging of diversity and will ultimately make more money, that's the end game, of course

But other than that, I'm really not sure how we can guarantee that AI are not biased. I would say maybe one thing that will be crucial to do in the meantime while we figure it out, is to realize that AI is not neutral. A lot of time people think that well is a machine, so therefore does not have any prejudice or does not believe in stereotypes because it's a machine is neutral

And I know there's a lot of people out there really don't understand UX because it's done so well that they don't even notice it. And I'm hopeful that continue this conversation with some new voices so that we can keep on exploring what you do, which is, I think, so fascinating. It's in front of us all the time. You and your team and your students are all creating the world that we are really, really immersed in. So you are important to us

Ah. Thank you, actually, for having me here. And I hope this conversation will inspire a lot of other people and other designer to trying to see what they can do to make the world of AI and UX better. So till next time
