CAN YOU IDENTIFY YOUR SOFT SKILLS? Don’t underestimate their power.

article image placeholderUploaded by @DBPardes
These are not things that you could put into a grid and have metrics attached to them. They are much more nuanced. And I want to get into this because I think it's great for all of us to recognize that we all have soft skills that are marketable and they have hard value attached to them

Definition of soft skills and YES, they can be learned! #softskills #careeradvice #selfawareness

Now, I have found that a lot of my success in my career has come from being able to lead and communicate well, both what I would consider soft skills. But even for all of you listening or part of this conversation, you don't have to be in a leadership position to kind of exercise these skills

The talent acquirers, the people that are looking. The first line is resumes. They get the resumes in. They filter through them. And these days, things happen so fast. Interviews don't always happen in the right environment to allow people to reveal themselves. What kind of training is there to help HR people notice the soft skills needed to fill a position? And thanks so much for this conversation

Hey, Mark, I couldn't agree with you more. I'm sure Bailey has thoughts as well, but I couldn't agree with you more. I guess the word soft comes from the opposite, which is hard skills, right? Which is like, I know Excel, I know how to code. I can use a skill saw. Soft feels like more human engagement talents or something. But you're right. Like, of course, of course, of course

Hey, and Josh, I just wanted to reply to your comment. You just sound like a great person and willing to just roll your sleeves up and yeah, those are skills that are just, you know, you can't code those skills. Those are skills that come from a human's engagement with the world and being available and being that that trusted advisor and that and that good collaborative partner. Sounds just great. I'm glad you were able to identify them so easily

Soft skills are not taught in school + adding soft skills to recruitment and onboaring process #humanresources #softskills #recruitment #jobsearch

In this way, you're trying to assess for soft skills and then oh my gosh. In the onboarding process. If these are skills that your employees need to be successful at your company, then you need to make them part of the onboarding process. Onboarding should not just be about how to book a vacation day or the tech systems we use here. It should also include our approach to feedback, our approach to conflict, how we do communication here, values of our culture

Hey, Bailey. I like the idea of prepping people so that they can be available fully to speak to their soft skills in ways that doesn't make it, like, obvious. And I like the prompts you're talking about. And when you place the ad, like, those ads imply that you value these kinds of skills. I wanted to ask you about hard skill jobs. Like, let's say you're being hired to run a forklift for a company

Intereting EI and soft skills perspectice

For instance, they may rate their soft skill at three out of ten, but for the people they're speaking to, it's a seven out of ten. So I think having somebody else demonstrate and tell you what they see as your soft skill is very impactful because you could be walking around with some extra batteries around and not even know you have them and somebody else could see it. So understanding the emotional intelligence spectrum and how to maximize efficiency on that is very important. So go forth

@DBPardes Technical skills and soft skills + soft skills in workplace culture #workplaceculture #technicalskills #softskills

Well, if you are starting to make soft skills a more important part of your recruitment process and your onboarding process, I would bet a lot of money on the idea that your culture will already improve. Because if you have people with these skills, they will already be a little bit better at intergenerational, interpersonal communications and dialogue and giving and receiving feedback and all of the things that make a really strong, innovative, adaptive corporate culture. So I think that they will already start to get better

@baileyparnell - in light of LinkedIn's latest labour market report - how do you envision companies can incorporate skill based hiring strategies?

So I just spent the last 2 hours going over this report and making notes and it's very interesting that your Swell covers a lot of the topics that are included in this report, particularly around the need and focus for soft skills as part of the hiring process. And I thought this would be a great opportunity to get your perspective on some of these aspects. The report states that the global labor market is undergoing a major shift, particularly in the Times post COVID

Hey, Deborah. I believe that my most effective soft skill would be my communication skills. I've always been able to articulate my thoughts into words and convey those thoughts to an audience. And I never thought of it as a skill because it always came natural for me. But since being on Swell cast, I can tell that I've gotten better at communicating, especially since we only have five minutes. I've learned how to be succinct and very much to the point in my conversation

You can train people on the hard skills, you can train people on technical stuff, but having them sit down with the book, crucial conversations, and then tell them, you know what, you've read the book, now let's go have a difficult conversation with an employee who's not performing well, all of those things come into place. How you look at yourself, how secure you are, having these conversations
