Politics: Should Justice Ginsburg's seat be filled before the election?

article image placeholderLive updates: Sen. Lisa Murkowski says she doesn’t support filling Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat before the election
I was so affected by the loss of Justice Ginsburg that I rewatched the documentary RBG and laughed and cried. And it was a great way to celebrate such an amazing life. So I hope that you have the time to do the same talk soon

I also want to add that many are saying that Trump announcing that he plans on appointing a woman to fill Justice Ginsburg's seat is a move to appeal to female daily voters who he has quickly been losing over the past four years. And I'm curious if you think this is a useful strategy or a desperate attempt to appeal appeal to a certain demographic of voters before the election. I'd love to hear any thoughts you have on this as well

Well, the one thing that I hope that we get out of this is some consistency. Now, I have read Donald Trump's list of potential Supreme Court nominees. He's got Tom Cotton and Ted Cruz in there. I was halfway expecting to see See Meatloaf and Tom Green in there as well. It just seems like it's a reality show now, I personally don't care to have Donald Trump choose the next Supreme Court Justice, but a seat needs filling, and he's President right now

Bring back the 60 vote minimum

You know, I forgot to mention that one thing that I think absolutely needs to happen. Besides having consistency on nomination is the 60 vote minimum. I really think we need to move it back to this. I just think think having a majority is not enough. I think anything that is a major decision, major law needs to be bipartisan. That's my opinion. But I really think when we have these long lasting decisions, we need to have each of them having bipartisan support

And I think while all the forms of media are ways in which people can debate one another, the real issues are coming from top leadership, and it is top leadership that is leading to this level of polarization. This is something that I think unless we change the leadership structure to truly reflect the people and the will of the people, whether that is determining changing the electoral College, changing how we represent the population fairly, what form of representation we should have

I like what Phil said. It needs to be something that's just there, like, okay, this needs to be done in one month or this needs to be done in so many days or whatever. It is irrespective of an election cycle. I like that. And if that's determined and that's it, then I'm okay with it. If that's what it says, that it needs to be done in one month, then just do it in one month

Yeah, I have to agree with you, Phil. I think that, you know, when the seat is open, it should be filled. But unfortunately, that's coming at a pretty horrible time. I mean, it couldn't have happened at a worse first time. And I think it kind of speaks a lot to where we're at in our democracy

Diversity

Even when I set off my nonprofit, I wanted different people with different backgrounds on the board to make sure that we're covering all aspects. And we're covering views from all points. When I look at the Supreme Court, I see everybody on the Supreme Court as either having a law degree from Yale or Harvard. Now, those are two fantastic schools. Those are top people. But you have virtually no diversity from those schools and no other universities from that train of thought

Get rid of the confirmation hearings, throw a little question and answer sheet, send it around to all the senators and let them vote on it then. And finally, I do like that diversity issue. I absolutely agree. For too long, presidents have been doing identity politics with their votes or with their nominations. A black man, Hispanic woman, a woman in general. They don't do enough. I guess diversity of thought

And it seems to be that we're going in that direction where that's all it is. And it drives me nuts. The whole reason why other Senate hearings are set up seems to be tossed aside for some sort of campaign or some sort of sound bite for media. And I couldn't agree with you more. That's how I see it now. And maybe I'm wrong about that. But that's how I see it as well
