How can leaders continue to be more effective managing in remote, distributed and hybrid environments?

And with the change of dynamic, I mean, beyond the obvious right now leadership development, again, whether that's in a training program or an online self paced course or it's coaching or whether it's what I call informal on the job kinds of leadership development where a boss is just helping a new manager figure out how to do this. Some of the rules have changed because we're not all together anymore. And maybe we never will be

I think we almost have to redefine what it is to be a leader, which in turn, I think would mean redefining what skills are required or desired for a leader to sort of elaborate on that. When I was in the workforce, it always seemed that whatever the leader's role was not only leading humans, but they had tasks of their own that they had to accomplish. And that's fine when you're in an office, a shared space, right?

This is great. I love your perspective. I hope more people join this conversation because I got to tell you what, I every day am in this game trying to figure out how we do exactly what you described because I do think we need a full reset. I don't believe that leadership can just organically and incrementally just evolve and that we're going to get it right that way

Leadership in the 21st century in the private sector, in my opinion, is seriously questionable, because leaders take the time to talk with people and get to know them and learn what their aspirations are, learn what their goals are. And beyond that, they help them outline how to achieve them, point them in the right direction, maybe advise them on a resource that will help them achieve that goal. That's what a leader does

If we can capture the imagination, the excitement, the heart, this can be something that and this is tricky though, right? Because leadership, how do you make it exciting for the people who are going to be led and the people who are going to be doing the leading

Hi, Eric. I agree with you. Leadership isn't really a job, although I would say in some organizations there are people who that's their only function, but maybe they're managers. I'm just trying to think of everything that you said and I think I agree with that. I do think, though, it's time for some kind of boot. And I am interested in your thoughts

Leadership is about all those things I had mentioned previously, setting the example motivating and inspiring others. So if you could give me a specific on what you mean by reset, I'd be more than happy to take that bone and just kind of run with it. Hopefully, you'll get a chance to reply to that. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks

And so I agree with your list, by the way. I think your general list of what leaders do, like role modeling is right. That makes sense to my brain. I've lived in this world for 27 years and I've been teaching people how to do it, probably just like you. But I do believe that there's some nuancing here in some places. And that's why before I was saying do we need, in some industries or in some of these situations full reset?
