Health & Wellness panel with Christina Wolfgram and Lauren Mcaulay

Hi, everyone. Welcome to our Swelt panel today on health and Wellness. I've got two great panelists chatting with me today. I'll be asking five questions around the topics of nutrition, mental health, and how to stay healthy and feel good during the pandemic. Joining me today are Christina Wolfe Graham, a comedian, mental health advocate and podcaster at Sabcast. The podcast and Lauren McCullough, one half of the Body Love Society, which is a podcast and community about replacing dieting with intuitive eating

My routine changes all the time!

I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling like emotions are kind of so up and down a lot of peaks and valleys, and so my precovid mental health routine doesn't always work for me anymore. I used to get up really early to exercise, and now I've usually been working out in the evening because my mornings I take really slow because I don't know, I'm overwhelmed before I even get out of bed

Self care

I think friends are so great for mental health and also just like making sure that everybody is on the same page who lives in my house, just around the safety guidelines of COVID like everybody's wearing masks, everybody's washing their hands, everybody's following the rules. And when you're going out on essential errands, just making sure that we're all watching each other's backs and making sure that we're doing this for the good of the people

How does nutrition impact your mental health?

So for our next question, I'd love to hear from Lauren first. How do you think nutrition impacts your mental health on a day to day basis as well as long term

Nutrition and mental health - the anti diet approach

All we cared about was our weight. And once we released that and could allow all food and just listen to our bodies, we started living a much deeply profound life that wasn't all about our looks and what society expected of us. Bye

Nutrition isn’t just about food! 🥰

And I think really nutritious for my soul is watching people I love eat something that I cooked that I loved. Yeah, those are my thoughts. I'm actually currently eating Kale Gnocchi from Trader Joe's, and this is not an ad. I just love it, that's all. Okay. Thanks. Bye

Thoughts on "comfort food"?

We use certain foods to not only fill our bellies but make us feel better. So first off, I'd love to hear what your favorite comfort food is and how you balance indulging in those feel good foods with then feeding your body nutrient rich meals. So, Christina, why don't you take this one first

Bean and cheese burritos forever!

So some meals I'm thinking like, yeah, I'm going to have this smoothie because not only does it taste good, it makes me happy, but it's nutritious in this way. Or I might have a meal that is just pure comfort, and it is giving me that mental nutrition that I need, and that is healthy. That is a good thing. If your intention behind a meal is I have to deprive myself

It’s okay to eat comfort food! :)

There's an ebb and flow rather than obsession and rigidity around food. So if you allow all food, you will naturally find yourself in a place of balance. And I know this might be hard to be like. What if I allow myself to eat whatever I want? I'll naturally find balance. And, yes, that is the case. Of course, I can't go into hours and hours of teaching everything that we talk about, but just know that's the basis of this

Last words of advice?

Thank you, ladies, for the answers to those questions. That definitely makes me feel a little bit better about when I indulge in my favorite comfort foods, which is usually going for a pint of Ben and Jerry's chocolate Fudge brownie ice cream. That's it's my favorite comfort food. So yeah. Thank you again. And we are going to wrap it up with one last question

Be gentle and compassionate with yourself!

You keep enjoying that. Ben and Jerry, I love that too. Okay, so honestly, my advice is just to be so compassionate with yourself and know you are doing the best you can right now. No one knows how to navigate life through a pandemic. I guess if you already lived through one, but right now this is different for everybody. It's challenging. There's a lot of uncertainty, and that is hard. So whatever is going on, let that be okay for now

Thank you Christine and Lauren!! ♥️

A word I'm going to say trustful is a word. But that was my big advice is to trust yourself. You are the only one who knows what truly works. You're the only one who can hear what your body is trying to tell you. So if you needed rest and you listened to your body and you took it, that is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of

Soil health = human health 🤟🏻🌎

I really enjoyed listening to this thread and thanks for tying food and nutrition into wellbeing, I strongly believe, you know, my health food is my comfort food. Whenever use some potatoes from my garden or the carrot grown on the community farm where they respect the soil and the life in it and that I try and eat some raw vegetable or herb from my garden every day to sustain my microbiome. So I believe that's all super connected. Thanks for your conversation. You

We'd, like, actually change our diets, take things out of our diet, put things into our diet and see what would happen to our sleep, to our energy levels, even to our skin and our pooping. And through that process, I feel like I shaved off. I feel now I'm ten years younger. I have the energy of somebody 1015 years younger than I do now all the time because of the stuff I eat and actually paying attention to my own personal Ayurveda
