Giving Yourself Permission (not that you need it)

article image placeholderUploaded by @cactuscloudsart
I think many people don't consider this as a fact of their life. And so we almost fall victim to when we haven't given ourselves permission to do a thing. I was going to say we don't give ourselves permission to do something exceptional, but I think I also need to reiterate that giving yourself even just ten minutes to draw in a sketchbook or to sit outside and paint even small moments like that are exceptional because I think it is almost an act of rebellion to give yourself time for joy

The fear of inadequacy

And I would feel like, since I don't have the talent that I'm not allowed to create, and I feel like that is another part of it, too, where it's just like, if you don't have the skill or you aren't as good as someone else, then you're not allowed to take up that space. That's definitely where I would come at it from. Just like, not even if practicing makes you better

And then it's like from then on it's just been this process of continually allowing myself and now pushing it to the point of asking questions of why do I feel I don't have permission or why do I feel like I have to do this or that according to this or that, et cetera, to share this in the way that you did and also hoping that others can feel the same. Empowerment is exciting. It's really exciting. Thank you for this

Regarding your classes

I've always wanted to paint. And I don't know why I don't take the chance either or practice or anything, but something I've always wanted to do. It's like on my bucket list. Anyways, long story short, let's hope so. I come into your class, I pay the money, and I gather you're not showing them a picture to draw. Like, I went to this class with a bunch of girls from work

And I don't know colors and I don't know, is this going to be a blob? But throughout the years as I've gone to museums of art and things like art can be anything. It can be a blob. I know I've looked at blobs before, but read why this person made it this way and what it reminded them of, or it's expression and how people feel

Well, thank you for sharing that. I think that just giving yourself time to really relax and take care of yourself is the most important, important thing that you should prioritize. And I think that is so important. And I don't think that we really recognize that or do much about that to take care of ourselves because we have so many other things that are going on. So I think that having that permission to set aside valuable time for yourself is so important

Re: @colbee777 Mechanics of teaching to break through fear.

And then through the technique part of the lesson we would begin with the worksheet and the very first block that we did on the worksheet was just a little box with the title wash which is a watercolor technique where you just color in a space and the very first step that I have everybody take is just to paint in this little square. That's all you have to do. There's no technique about it

Okay. I think it is absolutely brilliant that you did that. And it's just the giving permission thing. It's it goes back to giving permission, which is obviously, you know, because you made the sheet and you started the chat. But it's the same thing now that you you have a designated space to do the thing instead of the open expanse of the unknown without the potential of messing up. Now there's no potential of messing up and you art allowed to do it

And I remember there was this woman who came in with her young daughter and they came up to my series and they looked at the pictures and I just stood there and stared. And I was like, oh, my God, what are they thinking? And then they went to the next picture and just looked at a long time. And I was kind of lowkey started getting really nervous and almost like panic attack

Whether or not you're actually in a space where someone is going to judge you, there's that fear which links back to my point about perfectionism and Serena's point about permission. And I feel like this is all so impactful and so deeply interrupted blind that you really can't extricate one from the other. But there is also the quote about shiny being self absorbed was amazing. That blew my mind
