During the period of the Judges in ancient Israel. The exact date of its composition is uncertain, but it is likely written down by various authors over a period of several hundred years. Drawing on oral traditions and passed down stories, the book is at a historical account of the events and leaders of the period and provides insight into the political, social and religious conditions of ancient Israel during that time.
