Facebook is changing its name to Meta. Does it matter?

article image placeholderFacebook’s new name will be Meta
So news just broke that Facebook, after facing increasing scrutiny over the last several weeks, is going to be rebranding, and its new name is going to be Meta. And Zuckerberg has been quoted as saying, quote, but over time I hope we are seen as a Meta verse company, whatever that means. I'm just wondering, do you care? Do you use Facebook? I am getting closer and closer to permanently deleting my account

Hey, Bowie, how are you? It's good to talk to you again. It's been a while. Wow. That's incredible news. Facebook is trying to get rid of its reputation by by changing its name. That's silly. Unfortunately, I think in the short term it will work. People will be like, oh, Facebook. What's that? I don't know. And they'll forget all about their horrible business practices

Thanks for beating me with this swell 😂 (I have mixed feelings)

But also it's a form of record keeping because of the laws in our state that's going to help me going forward. So anyway, that goes to just two personal examples of how Facebook is a way to communicate in a way that I don't see as possible in other forums because people are just not on those forums that I have relationships with. So I'd love to hear from other people's walks of life what they think in terms of their relationship with Facebook too

@Raretodd I use it for similar reasons

Hi. I just wanted to respond to you because I thought that it's interesting that you say you use groups and you like getting birthday wishes because I don't get birthday wishes because I don't put my birthday information on there. But I do get lots of information and connections through groups, and I don't have that many friends. So I'm not pouring over what's going on in the newsfeed, but yes, groups are really helpful to me

Facebook by Meta as opposed to Facebook by Facebook

This is dumb. Who cares? Honestly, the damage has been done. I also want to point out, as far as I'm aware, Facebook and Instagram will not be having name changes. So the name changed was for the company. So now instead of it being Facebook by Facebook, it's Facebook by Meta and Instagram by Meta. Sort of adds to the who cares factor of all of this

@Taylor you made me laugh 😂

You just brought up something interesting, the fact that it's going to be Facebook by Meta and Instagram by Meta. I was thinking about how that actually could change people's perception because maybe some people I can imagine they think that Facebook is has been bought by another company and they're going to clean up their act. I can see that being a misinformation spreading around on Facebook by people who have not certain conspiracy theories

So I don't think this is just because of again, the things that it seems to have been planned for a long time, and not just the reaction to the recent events that they've had from a PR perspective, and also the people who hold them accountable, the journalists, people in the news and media and everywhere they are not stupid either. Right. So just changing the name is not going to get them a free pass for anything

Shedding light more on the XR side beyond just the reputation motivation of

So I'm actually a student at Cornell University, and I'm taking a class on AR VR right now. More recently, I had the opportunity to try the Oculus Quest headset, and honestly, I think it is the next big thing. I think for a while now there have been a lot of people doubting the whole kind of evolution of VR, whether or not VR will ultimately be adopted. In my opinion, it's not really a question of if VR will succeed

@dangtony98 very interesting! Curious to know your thoughts on this

And I'm only asking that I genuinely do not know the answer to that question, but I'm only asking that because I feel like the majority of people that I know that are around my age, I'm not going to include people over the age of, let's say, 40 in that because I think that there was, like a slight missed opportunity there with a lot of the VR experiences

Adoption curve, generations, improvements in VR

So I think we're going to see tremendous progress in all of these different flawed or Sapphire points in VR right now. And I think that's going to really drive the adoption curve for everyone, starting with the younger generation, as I mentioned before, and then kind of passing it forward into the older generations too, as they start to see that as the new norm

@dangtony98 Ethical concerns & what you find most exciting!

And if you also see any potential moving forward. I wasn't surprised by the news that Facebook announced this. I think we all know that they've been heading here for quite a while. The timing of it, I do think is interesting, though. It's hard to say for whatever would be a good time since they always seem to be in some sort of trouble in the media initially. But anyway, I'm looking forward to more talk from you and put that's

Because going into AR specifically is not a very comfortable experience for everyone. But I do know that Oculus reality labs or research labs, they're working on that on all fronts of AR and VR. I have several friends who work there, so I do think that if anybody is going to come out with the answers and what we do with ARVR, it is going to be sadly, Facebook

This is just my take on the whole rebranding of facebook.

But I think that if Facebook with them rebranding, I think it's a step in the right direction. Sorry about that. My thing. You just cut off because my blood sugar level got weird anyways. Yeah, guys. I mean, it's a step in the right direction. I think everybody just needs to give it a chance. Everybody thinks that Zuckerberg is the Antichrist and Facebook's monitoring us. Yeah. So what do straight up like for real? I was talking to somebody about something

@Binx75075

And media has doubled down to produce and push that sort of content to us. And what Facebook does is it takes it pretty much to the next level because its algorithms figure out that's the kind of stuff you like, and then it doubles down and keeps like, what do you call pulling you deeper into the rabbit hole?

Did you know VR dysfunctions eye muscles?

I think this is super dangerous because one of my housemates, I live in a community property. We have a bunch of coliving situation. And I live with a scientist. He's an optical scientist at UC Berkeley. They study optics. They study all the technology that helps us fix our eyes and understand our eyes. And he was sharing with me how many people are coming in with myopia and issues with their eyes after using VR for extended periods of time. And here is Facebook now pushing VR

@MysticScientist Speculative fiction https://s.swell.life/SSp4cQ3qhMorv97

And it made me think of a short story I read recently called Office of the Mind that is satire and speculative fiction that features VR very prominently. And so I wanted to share it here for you and anyone else who's may find that interesting. And I'm curious to see how much the short story ends up being precious
