How do you get through running plateaus?

article image placeholderUploaded by @bowie
And I was there at the start of last week. So I think that this is just kind of a temporary thing as my body is adjusting to starting to do longer distances as I'm training for ten K. But I would really love any insight or advice you have as continue on my running journey. Next step, being a ten K, and then after that, a half marathon. Okay. Thanks

Hey. So I'm not a runner per se. I do exercise, I do yoga and bar, and I have found lately that I used to be my endurance and my energy just used to be way more up. I used to be excited. I started consistently a year ago to help battle seasonal depression, but I have found just lately this past month. I don't have the stamina that I have last year or this time last year

Hey, Sarah, I hopefully I'm saying your name right? Please let me know if I'm not. Thank you so much for your response. It was really nice to hear this tonight and hear that you can relate, because I definitely hope you're feeling discouraged today, especially because exercise is also my Goto for handling seasonal depression and anxiety. And just like keeping me much more grounded and embodied and not spiraling out in my brain, especially since the pandemic started

And again, you can take a break from the running, but do something like swimming or something else, at least so that you keep the fitness up so you don't just become a couch potato or what have you? And it happens to me. And I think I mentioned in this world that we talked about in terms of our physical goals for this for the year

So if you get Harvard and you need any advice or if you're looking for a trainer, because I can train people remotely with plans, conditioning plans, then let me know. But I'll be happy to give you advice, too. But yeah, there's a way to do it. And also periodization is really important. So you have got a plan

And even though I've periodized the training, he may have had a very hard sparring session the day before or two days before. And even with the recovery session, he's not ready to go yet. So he didn't have to do something different. But with a goal in mind to still sort of get him pushing further into recovery and still optimize his training. So he doesn't feel like mentally. He also doesn't feel like he can't do it

And it definitely encouraged me to just kind of keep what I'm doing and make adjustments as I'm going and also to make sure I'm not over training because I definitely have a habit of doing that because I just get excited and really want to see results. And often I think when I've had in the past and I've had a day like my other day of running, where I was just, like, much slower than normal

And I also do think I'm trying to educate myself more to just about what I should be doing as far as my nutrition and things like that, because when I'm exercising a lot, I tend to be less hungry, which I know is I don't know if that's weird or not, but I realized the other day that I don't think I've been eating or drinking enough to keep up with the amount of energy I've been exerting between running and doing yoga

And typically you have five running zones that you exercise in, and when I Plateau, I tend to back off and try to build my base up more. So I will actually use those recovery days and really try to form that base. And that means running in zone one and zone two instead of three and four. I think most of the time we're going to be running in zone four, pinning that when we're doing a competitive run

Hey, Bill, thank you so much for sharing your experience with this. I am super excited to start monitoring my HRV. I don't have a chest strap yet, but it looks like there's an app that I was able to add to my Smart watch, and I'm going to see what kind of results that gives me starting tomorrow morning and just getting a better sense

And I also use heart rate durability with my clients, especially the ones that I see all the time, that I can then track it properly for them. So I'm going to put a link to Joel Jameson talking about heart rate variability and conditioning and what it's all about. And I'll also put a link to his piece of software because I believe it's the best piece of software out there to measure heart rate variability. So I'll do that and let me know what you think

Hi Bowie. I've just got a link to the website Spade with Morpheus. You can have a look at it. There's lots of reviews out there as well, but I recommend it. It's what I use myself and with my clients. Have a look. They do a heart rate monitor as well as the M Five band which tracks your HRV. They work together. I use Polar heart rate monitors just because I've always used them
