Should companies be held responsible for our addictions?

article image placeholderOxyContin maker to plead guilty to federal criminal charges, pay $8 billion, and will close the company
Some of you might have seen the news already today about Purdue Pharma who is now bankrupt due to violations. One of them being about abusing anticickback laws was not good. They have pled guilty to this violation, essentially condemning themselves for being responsible for contributing to the opioid crisis, which has taken many lives and also ruined the lives of families across the United States

@SeekingPlumb

It depends on the item of addiction. E.g. Plastics, food, pharmaceuticals.

I think it's a complex question, like there's responsibility on both sides, depending on what it is that the item that is being addicted to, I think depends on how much responsibility is shifted in which direction. If we talk about our addictions to plastics and things like that, I think the greater responsibility lies in those who manufacture them, because when they continue to pump them out and we still need to buy what's produced inside of the plastic, and there's not as many options

They're just going to keep doing it and just take a pill to mask the symptoms and just hope they can keep getting away with whatever it is they're getting away with or like with the opioids, the pain. The pain is for a lot of people. Ridiculous. And then, on one hand, you're telling people, well, don't use marijuana, don't use this natural stuff. Here, use this stuff that we just mixed up in a lab somewhere

Sacklers should be facing jail time.

Rachel, I want to answer your question specifically to the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma. I think it's a fair question, and I think seeking plum brought up some good points. But I want to answer this question specifically to Purdue Pharma and the Sacklers. And I agree with with Robin, the Sackler should be facing jail time. Absolutely should. And this settlement is rushed. It is really in my mind

I posted as well on this government is now going to be running this pharmaceutical company. Nobody lost their job. That means this is just a paper transfer. In some sense, none of the executives or marketing professionals who did all this is losing their jobs. Everybody gets to keep their jobs. Everything goes on as before. It's as when nothing happened. It just passed from one family to the US taxpayer
