#TransAtWork | Talking with non-binary writer & editor Lys Sorresso (they/them)

article image placeholderUploaded by @bowie
Lisaresso is a nonbinary editor, writer, educator and communications consultant. They are also one of my favorite people in the world and have a deep well of experience as an arts and social justice educator. And they're just a gosh dang beautiful writer who I am so lucky to know. Thank you so much for being with me on Swell list and helping me kick off my latest series Trans at Work

Transitioning at work @QueerDictionary

And I thought it would be really special, special, interesting and potentially helpful for others out there to talk specifically about the experience of being trans or gender nonconforming and out in the workplace

How does being trans influence your work?

And that inevitably 100%, I feel like has impacted my work not only as a writer, a novelist and essayist multimedia producer, but also in the other kinds of writing, editing and producing I have done not only for freelance clients but also obviously here with my work as well. I'm curious how you feel your identity and experience as a non binary person has impacted or influenced the work you do as a writer, editor, educator, communications consultant?

The future for trans people at work

What are some things or gaps you see in your experience across industries that you think need to be addressed so that workplaces can be more inclusive and safer and also encouraging of trans people being out at work? Rather than often having to go through so much emotionally and mentally and sometimes physically in order to feel as though they can come out at work and be in an economic position in which that may not have negative consequences. I'd love to hear your perspective on that

And lastly, just because it's fun and I want to know what is something you are currently obsessed with and why it doesn't have to be in relation to work. It can be something like a TV show, a recipe, a trail where you like to go walking, a new outfit, an animal, whatever. I would love to know what you are currently feeling. Just really fixing them and is giving you a lot of joy

Bye. Hey, Bowie, thank you so much for pulling me into this conversation. I think it's a really great one to have. Just a caveat. As you know, this is not my regular voice. I am currently battling some kind of cold or flu, but maybe this would be what my voice sounds like after I start going on tea. So I kind of wanted to do it like this because my voice is in a lower register and I just feel more comfortable like that anyway

When I worked for a media company and went through and edited cookbooks, I remember working on this barbecue smoker cookbook that was from a guy who had a good following. And I remember my editor was like, I'd like you to specifically look for any kind of red flag language, because the audience is like, straight CIS dudes. And I was like, cool, I can definitely do that

And I felt like that gave me a lot of power and that I have been able to advocate for myself within my workplace and with my bosses and supervisors for a safer workplace. And they have been responsive and I know there's stuff in the works. The thing is that there wasn't anything in place before that, not before I came, but it's just taken them, I think, a long time to get the amount of employees and get the training modules or whatever

And then like a half cup of olive oil to make it into a sauce that you can then slather on the cabbage and stuff between the leaves. And last time I added some lemon zest. You could do whatever the f*** you want to, it doesn't really matter. And then you roast it for, I don't know, like 30 minutes or something. And you put chopped walnuts on top of it and then roast it again for another five minutes. And it is so good

Liz, your replies made my day. Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to share all these thoughts and feelings. These kinds of conversations are so important to me and I also know others because though we have come a long way, there's still further to go. And I really appreciate not only your honesty about some of the challenges you have faced in work situations, but also you sharing your joy. Of course. And I am also obsessed with you
