Investing 101: Where do I begin?

article image placeholderHer First $100K - Financial Feminism & Money Education
I also wanted to share a resource that a friend shared with me called her 1st 100K and it's all about what I mentioned here uplifting people, particularly women and other more oppressed groups of people when it comes to financial sustainability and health. I'm also going to be using her as a resource as I delve further into my investment education. So in case that's useful for anyone else, here it is. And thanks in advance for any advice and feedback

Stock equities are inherently risky, and what I have found is usually if you invest in a mutual fund or some other fund which has fees and things that's associated with that, very few people actually end up beating the market can almost never beat the market. But investing in the market for the long run, investing in an index fund, for example, where there are no fees associated with that, something like an ETF or something, it's probably the same as a more prudent thing to do

And then the summer I was planning on looking at, I don't know, just expanding my knowledge with investing because I'm someone that I don't want to do put a lot of money into anything if I'm not educated about it. But I also don't want to waste my time because I know I'm 20 years old and I have the money now and I'm trying to be a smart College student and not go splurging my money and then be risky and take bad decisions

@arish thank you!

Ours. Thank you so much for taking the time for this really wonderful reply. It was super helpful for me. And like the nerd that I am, I spent several hours last night just like having a cold beer and, you know, doing what you would do on a Friday night, which is research for hours into different kinds of life insurance and also different options for investing. And so now I have a list of about a million questions for my financial adviser the next time we meet

@JonathanGossett 🎉🎉🎉

Because our relationship with money is like so many other relationships in our lives where we can have really good intentions, we can do our best, but life comes along and deals us things good or bad that can alter our situation and make us have to rethink and reframe where we are. And so I found it really helpful to create sort of a to do list for myself for the rest of this year

But it was funny. When I finally worked with a financial advisor in my 40s, when I needed to start saving money for my kids College, he said, Why did you stick with these guys? I mean, this tiny operation? And I said, Look, I did look at Charles Schwab and Merrill Lynch and all these other investment banks. And when I was in person, I said, Can I save for retirement? They're like, yeah, that's a great idea

Tim, thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience of this. This was incredibly helpful just to hear about where you started and then also like how your savings goals changed over the years, too, to of getting to the point where you're trying to save for your kids and learning more from you about index funds, too, is incredibly helpful. And also the ethical component, too, of investing. That's really important to me

@Liammm

That is a really easy, good place to start because those are things that I understand at this moment in time and are a good jumping off point for maybe further endeavors as I go along in the next several years. So thank you

I think your initial reaction now, as others have mentioned, index funds, I think are a great way to go, and you can really kind of cater your portfolio to what you understand using index funds. The one thing that I do want to correct I've heard this a couple of times, listening to this entire swell chain, is that there's no cost to index funds. That's not necessarily true. There is a cost in there

@Phil Index funds & crypto

And knowing that she makes Commission based on the insurance products that she sells made me especially hesitant to not because I don't want anyone to make a good living, I do, but I don't want to be overpaying or buying a product that I don't necessarily need. So I feel like I've already learned quite a lot in the last couple of weeks once I did more research and dug more into it. And all of your responses really helped inform that as well

John Bogle and Index Funds

So as far as researching that, I would research what asset classes are for index funds and understanding what small cap index funds are, what the Russell 2000 is, what the S. Amp P 500 is, what the Nasdaq 100 is, and figure out what you're comfortable with. A lot of those might be more volatile than the others. So kind of tracking what the performance is over time and see what that volatility is. And if you're comfortable with the volatility, then you can start investing

My Crypto approach

There are some that I would absolutely stay away from, but that's going to be very speculative and that's not going to be a lot of my money. There are crypto index funds. I have not looked into them very deeply. I'm not sure whether they're investing into crypto companies or crypto currencies themselves. If they are crypto companies, that would be something I would consider, but not with a lot of my money. I think it's very speculative

But one tip that I do suggest is only investing in things that, you know stuff about or that you have learned about, if that makes sense. So, for example, I don't know about real estate, so I'm not going to invest in real estate. I currently am invested in stocks and kind of have a grasp in stocks just because of videos that I've watched and research that I've done
