#TranslatorInterview | In conversation with translator and editor Georgia de Chamberet

article image placeholderUploaded by @bowie
It details the post World War II life of Mangele, the angel of death of Auschwitz as he was known, who was infamous for his experiments conducted on Auschwitz prisoners. Georgia has done so much interesting work, so I'm so pleased to have her here with us on Swell. Georgia, welcome. Thank you so much for being with us

How you got started

Hi, Georgia. I would love to start out by hearing a bit about how you got started in translation. Did you always imagine that this would be part of the path you would take in your career? Or is there an interesting story about how you ended up doing such interesting translations?

Advice for translators

We're we have a really lovely community of international readers and writers. I'm curious, what advice do you have for anyone out there who may be interested in doing work in translation? What do you suggest they might do to get started and how can they make connections so that they can begin to do some of this work? And do you have any advice for some of the more seasoned translators out there based on your own experience over the years?

#askafailure

One of my favorite topics to discuss with those in literary and creative circles is failure. As it seems to be such an integral part of the creative process. I'm curious if you could speak to how failure has all played a role or has shaped your work or career or life in any way that has been significant. And if you have learned anything from failure and rejection through the years as an editor and translator and someone who deeply values and appreciates literature

It's. Lastly, I know I and others on Swell would love to know if there's anything you have read or watched or any art you have experienced recently that you really loved and would recommend that we also check out and experience. Georgia, thank you so much for being with us. I would like to open up this conversation to others who may have questions as well before you join us and really looking forward to being in conversation with

It was to showcase a new generation of French writers who hadn't yet been published in English, and that included Michel Welbeck, Big Bidi, Abdul Ben, aquista incredible, actually now, because they're all wonderful writers and very successful in English. And to think that they hadn't come out yet. Anyway, and then I went on. I sort of worked more and more and more as a consultant with publishers on both sides of the Channel, helping to get books into English

@bowie

Good question. You need a high level of fluency and cultural understanding to translate well and get good work. So if you're not born into a multilingual family, studying abroad or living abroad, and getting a degree in a language as well as an accreditation as a translator is important, you need total immersion. Basically. Then you need to familiarize yourself with which publishers publish translation s, which writers have worked well in translation, which writers have won awards like the International Booker

So you're still open to learning to you don't become the expert who knows everything because one doesn't know everything and actually that's one of the joys of working in publishing because you're constantly learning and working on new projects with new ideas, new writers and that is what is wonderful, it just regenerates the whole time

Anyway, she was really arguably the first modern celebrity and art we've done TV art books. Oh, well, okay. I've just got back from the Paris Book Market, where I was looking for a couple of good books which would travel well and attract readers in the UK and US that I could pitch and translate into English for some publishers here. So I, first of all, have a fabulous to be read pile, TBR pile to see me through June, top of the pile
