Obesity in Africa

article image placeholderUploaded by @Bolanile
Greetings. So today, we're going to be discussing obesity in Africa. And I am really excited to dig deep into this topic because I am a certified integrative nutrition and health coach, and I'm going to be be speaking with a registered dietitian and nutritionist as well. And so we're going to weigh in in terms of what could be the cause of obesity in Africa. Is it lifestyle? Is it hereditary? What could be some of those causes? And what are some of the solutions?

There's also the question about portion sizing and us being able to control how much we eat at once. So I think that that's something we definitely need to make more noise about. You don't necessarily have to eat a whole mountain of food at once. Take it slow, include more vegetables. We have so many of all these things Africans. They both are healthy. African cuisine is full of different food

@dietitian_afriq one step forward

Because there are behaviors that can be tweaked a little bit. How you Cook your food, how you buy your food, when you eat your food, how fast you eat your food, the choices, the rhythm you get into. But can you take us back to a very specific example of working with someone and how you, oh, my gosh, how you help them breathe into the confidence that they need to have to know that you're a partner of them. You're not going anywhere

And if they're consuming too much in excess to cut calories and or add physical activity, so that the excess calories are offset by physical activity that Burns them. Right. So that's the first part, which is you have to be on a weight reducing calorific intake per day. That's the first part of the trifecta. But even if you do that, there are a couple more things that need to happen for good weight reduction. Right. The second is healthy fats

And those people have to be more aware of that and track their food intake and making sure they're active as much as possible to combat that. Because even if a person may be heavier set doesn't mean they have to necessarily be obese. And to be obese is to be extremely overweight. And so I don't know that anyone naturally is extremely overweight. I think, yes, you have some children, they may be chubby babies

But as Sami Soba mentioned, with globalization and fast food craze, like a lot of our diet has changed and the portion size is completely out of control, too much. And then our foods, because it is high in starch and meat, have a high calorie density. For example, there was a viral post that went viral about plantain recently and talking about the number of calories in plantain. And as Africans, we eat plantains with rice

And at the very least everybody knows how to walk. You can just walk for around the block. If that's as much as you can do to be active, adding a walk at the beginning of the day, maybe at the end of the day if that's all you can do, that's a great place to start. So one being active, removing your body daily, very important. Another point that sue had mentioned was the health fats. I think that's really important
