Slipping on the slippery slope of storytelling

article image placeholderUploaded by @Binati_Sheth
Traits displayed by characters are being romanticized and in accordance to that, a lot of teams on Booktock, which is book ticktock, are saying some incredibly problematic things because of the storytelling they witnessed, which is shaping their business

With that, I wrapped up the introduction, and people from the audience could come up and discuss. So we didn't really end up discussing much of the slippery slope because I feel people had experienced the positive impact of storytelling so much more that they were unwilling to, let's say, go into it. So we began by Sajid Kumar, who said that, do we really need to be scared of storytelling? Because storytelling is not a one way street anymore. It is two way

Just tossing in my thoughts on this

I don't know what the current status of this case is, but it was a horrible story and it underlines how little we understand about the psychology of generation that's grown up consuming the Internet and also the darker side of storytelling. With great power comes great responsibility. I'd like to choose this quote to convey my point that to a writer, knowing both the good and the bad that can come from well executed storytelling is very important

@Binati_Sheth @Ramya

And part of me, in thinking about this doesn't want to put the onus entirely on storytelling when it comes to history books, perhaps more so when it comes to our personal ideas of self and ideas of others. Yes, when it comes to fictional tales, maybe the responsibility really comes back to ourselves and our relationship to those stories, how those fictional stories tie into interweave with the stories of self, the stories of how we perceive others or the state of society, etc, etc

So there is a lot of either it is engagement, as you said, that is entangled with storytelling, or it is marketing of some product or service or whatever it is. And that is when it becomes a slippery slope. I think that is when creators sort of lose sight of their responsibilities as creators to some extent because there is a larger pie, which is very alluring. So I thought I'll share that here. And lovely perspectives from everybody here. Ramya and Christina. So, great poster

So storytelling is very brilliant, and ultimately, the choices that creators and content distributors make is what determines whether the slope slips or not. So we're yes. Great power comes. Great responsibility. Love it. Thank you so much, Ramya

Just a couple of tweets, just a couple of news articles, just a couple of videos and voila. Done. So I you'd think enjoy it. You won't really know about these people. But currently there's an attic educational technology major called Baju in India and they still use storytelling to basically talk about how great their product is. When the product is I don't even want to go into it. And initially they were seen as like this oh my God

Okay. Thank you so much for sharing your personal experience. To your personal experience, I'd add mine. You know, any anytime someone asks me what books you interested in philosophy, my answer is anime. And people don't believe me. And I always give the full context of why I'll say that because as a nine standard kid with dialogue, Internet connection, and I live in a very small town, right?

@Binati_Sheth

Those are such great examples. I mean, you've got me thinking, like, how do you combat that? And because the truth, quote unquote, is so nuanced and complex, and most of society these days is more about efficiency and shortcuts and reductiveness. And so then it becomes very much about the stories and not just what people want to hear, but capturing the imagination, capturing the heart, capturing insecurities, capturing all sorts of things. And then stories become even more important

@Binati_Sheth The Art of Storytelling

And I've practiced storytelling for decades. I used to write, now I just do it verbally, oral storytelling, which is where it all started. So instead of saying somebody, well, I think what your problem is, and you should, and if I were you, I would I'd never talk to people about their problems like that. They tell me their story, their problem, and then I say, okay, this is what happened to me

@Binati_Sheth Consent in the transaction of Consumer & Producer

It's my thing in life for friends, for people in audio all the time, at work, in class. And my friends know I'm famous for this thing called S******* the Story, which means I take something that happened in real life and then I'll retell the story. But I'll exaggerate this bit or I'll diminish this little bit and I'll add color to this part. And what it does is it creates a comedy bit

Because before the father could pass it off to the son, the art, so to speak, was lost because people died or killed off or whatever. So Asia is the land referral storytelling because that's literally how we talked about our ancestors. Because writing as a whole didn't begin much in the future. I love that you highlighted that. And one of the main reasons why I'm enjoying Swell, even I enjoy podcasting too. Like I listen to podcasts and things

And I said, It's not actually the reading, it's the storytelling that's good for you. You don't have to read a page, you can have it coming into your ears. And it's just a delightful, creative, human thing to enjoy. And I think it's super good for our mental health. I think it's actually necessary. I think storytelling is essential and I think sometimes it's not accentuated enough. I do read excuse me, on the Internet

I learn more when I listen to something and then I scratch it down. So maybe even visual, too. So I'm an oral visual learner. And if you make me learn by wrote, I will probably not be able to do it. That doesn't work for me, right? And that's okay. So just like that, I think it kind of transfers to every other aspect of life, too. And because you're such a fan of stories, here's a story for you

Obviously, you've got to have text at some stage, but I print it out on paper and cut it up and do jigsaw puzzles and I've got to put it back together again. And this hands on learning is far more effective than, here, read this and then memorize it and then reproduce it. It never works, right? So, yeah, 100%. I completely agree with you. I love that story, though. That's beautiful
