And this is why Lovecraft can still be so fascinating to read them in this day and age, because even though we've pulled back the curtain on so many things you consider terrifying, such as refrigeration, for one thing, and found them to be fairly innocuous. Every time we make a scientific discovery, it feels that we realize that there is yet another thing we have left undiscovered
I do my absolute best to really distance myself from his own personal politics when I read his stories because I obviously don't agree with them. But also, I feel like you mentioned the thinking about the universe and cosmicism and death and dread and all of these things. I think he has a really unique way of capturing those feelings. And some of his stories are some of my favorite stories of all time. For that reason, they caused me to think about life in a different way
And one of the weird things I've been engaged with recently is kind of trying to figure out to what extent one needs to communicate these caveats about his negative views, because the more I've read into lovecraft, the more I've kind of found that a lot of his negative views have almost this double aspect of reflecting his own personal fears
