Howard Stern Pretends He Doesn’t Understand How Ellen Degeneres Behaves.

article image placeholderHoward Stern comin Yo! We're In Lockdown GH - SUBSCRIBE @OpieRadio podcast
I was always thinking about it, because I know a lot of people in show business who have this edict. You're not allowed to look at them. You have to look down me. I could never say that to someone. I would just feel f****** weird about it. The odd thing is, I'm known on the air as a p****, but off the air, I'm known as a great guy. For the most part

I'm not a big Howard Stern fan, either. Now, to me, looking back, kind of seemed like those really stuck up terrible people that probably a lot of celebrities are. You don't really know. I'm sure there's plenty of people that aren't celebrities that are just as bad or even worse. So I don't like to make those kind of claims. But yeah, personally, whenever I see something that I don't like, it kind of ruins that person

And when he was going to his car, people wanted to take photos. And he was just a lovely guy. So I don't know where that rumor came from, but you never know, I guess, because we really see what they want us to see in terms of these celebrities. I remember once I worked on a show and the Kardashians were coming out. And I mean, the only people that were really in the vicinity were photographers and security guards and then the employees working on the show

Darryl Dawkins, King of Comedy and being a boxing judge

I'm reminded of a scene in there where a lady is on the phone, sees the character that Jerry Lewis is playing who's a famous comedian, and she wants him to wait while she gets off the phone so that they can get autographs and pictures. And Jerry politely says, Well, no, I have to go. And her response is, I hope you get cancer

In the first episode, he describes how he goes about his business, that he watches other people. He watches how they behave, what makes them endearing, what makes them beloved. And he emulates that. And when I hear about these celebrities who have a persona for the camera and then are completely diametrically opposed personalities, once that cameras turned off, I think of Dexter, you know. Yeah. That's where I stand with all of this

Then I'm in a work van, and I'm listening to this voice that resonates about this establishment of wealth and privilege and Fame. And then you find out that's all he just wanted to be there the whole time. So I guess that's what I'm more asking. Not so much what their proclivities are sexually or whatever it may be, whatever, drugs, whatever

He just consistently acts like a jerk when he's not hosting a game show or a variety TV show. So I don't know. I feel like when you're in a certain position of influence, especially when there's children involved. I think we need to be more selective about the people that we have hosting or that we put in the limelight. But I totally hear your point. Otherwise, your boxing story was a great example

But on a personal level, he had a video where he was addressing atheist and he made the statement, how can you tell me you have any morals if you don't believe in God? Now, from someone in my position as an atheist. When I hear something like that and I've heard he's not unique here. I've heard this said ad nauseam, right? How can you have any morals if you don't believe in God?

JD Salinger & Louis CK

And it wasn't until years later when a book came out that his daughter, I believe that went deeper into who Salinger really was, the misogyny, the abuse, all these things that are more well known publicly about him, that it was the first time in my life as a young person where I felt this inner conflict around. But I fell in love with this person's books and knowing this about them, can I still love these books?

Ellen

I just thought people were kind of like, okay with the fact that there's Ellen, the persona, and there's Ellen, the human who seems deeply invested in what she perceives to be the power of celebrity and the ways in which that protects her in behaving really badly

And I was under the impression he did just directly apologize and say there was no excuse for his behavior, and he went away for a self imposed exile for a year or so before he tried to return. And that's another conversation. I guess there has to be a road to redemption, I think unless you committed an actual crime, again. Harvey Weinstein a Bill Cosby. There has to be a path to redemption. I think we can't just assume no one can ever make a living again

I do think there is a scale, and I do think that some should be allowed to apply for. Oh, man, I'm forgetting the word you use now for redemption. There should be redemption applications. And I thought, Louis CK, it's like if anyone's going to handle this in the best way possible, it'll be Louie. He's going to know I've listened to all his comedy. He's going to know how to deal with this

Like, are you out of your mind? Have you lost your mind? Right. But taking into account that the nature of Louie's comedy has always been over the top pushing of the envelope. I used to hear him when he was a guest on the Opien Anthony show, and he was horrendous. Sometimes there are things that would have had him canceled all day long in today's climate. And this is just what made Louis Louie

But nevertheless, if you have to put those into play and people are watching and people are documenting, then don't go out on a limb and preach the other side. It doesn't make any sense because you're going to get called out on your BS pretty quick, an awesome topic, and brought back all of my disdain for Chris Berman. Thank you. And I could listen to your podcast forever. Your voice is incredibly soothing, so keep this going. Thank you

And whenever Michael Buffer is doing an event, there's always somebody that will come up to me and they say, hey, Michael Buffer will be here in a few minutes. Just don't try to start a conversation with them. Just don't talk to them. And to be honest, I don't know whether that's coming from him or whether that's coming from people trying to protect him or just people that have tried to talk to him and speaking from experience
