Art Therapy for Writers - An interview with Binati Sheth

article image placeholderUploaded by @arish
But I wanted to find a topic that was not the usual topic she would discuss on Swell. It turns out that there is something about Beneath that she normally does not talk about the fact that she uses art as therapy and to take a break from a polyfic writing career, the picture you see as the COVID image for this well is actually a piece of art that she created. We will ask her about the image in a bit, but first, let's start the interview

@arish A gradual discovery process of having the world melt away, 40 minutes, each week.

But this is where I think I gradually discovered that without direction, if you are just randomly letting your hand, your brain and your device do the thing. For me, the device was those pencils, the ones that you can push from the back and the lead comes out. It was my priciest of possessions. And yes, that's that's the story of how the art therapy began

@Binati_Sheth Couple of quesrions and also opening up for listeners to join in with their own question

And I also never really enjoyed art in a class too much. But nowadays, or any time, any time in my career, whenever I've had a piece of paper and pen, if I'm sitting in a meeting, I invariably end up doodling something. So I completely get the art therapy part of it. I've actually even tried acrylic paints at one point and just put some random kind of colors on there

@arish Art therapy helps the conscious, the unconscious and subconscious to align with each other.

Because known to say that things so hard that you can smell blood in your nose. Exactly. You want to smell blood in your nose. Otherwise you will mostly be recreating or retelling instead of doing something original, doing something that could get your name down in the history books, so to speak. Yes. Thank you for sharing your art process as well. That was interesting to see. Parallels

Thank you for opening this and inviting more questions for Benedict Benedi. I'm guessing that you would say this other form of art that I've seen of yours also applies in many of the ways that you've described, and that is your potted creations, your mossy creations. And I'm curious about a few things of how you got started. Where do all these creations go when you're done? And do any of them have any of them inspired some of your writing?

@SeekingPlumb Itโ€™s a hobby. Most of it goes in my journal. Some of the plants are sold. The repeating patterns help me write more clearly.

The kind of biodiversity we have over here with plants and rocks and things of this sort, it's super cool. So that's where it started trying to make something that looks like a miniature version of something that looks like the real world. And I don't think the gardening stuff has inspired any writing, but drawing stuff definitely has because I think whenever I get too confused or too bored or too annoyed or to any kind of an emotion even too happy for that instance, I tend to do this

I know exactly what you're talking about with respect to the repetitive patterns and completing them. And I haven't done it in a while, but I used to do them more frequently and share them on social media. And also, I have to say, I'm very impressed with your green thumb. This is not something I have, but I also appreciate the reminder of how the drawing filters into the focusing of your thoughts. Maybe this is something I need to return to. Thank you so much

@SeekingPlumb You have a green thumb thatโ€™s to be discovered. @arish Any more questions?

With regards to the green thumb, I can give you only one advice and the number one individual to blame for the green thumb or not the green thumb is nurseries and places that sell potted plants. So in India, I don't know the situation in Canada, but in India specifically in my state, this is called Wavard. Wavard is the plants that are sold by farmers who are farmers specifically for horticulture or for agriculture purposes

They remind me of the times when I lived in the Seattle area. And I love like if I could live anywhere on the planet, it would be that area with the huge, ah, pine trees, redwoods, what have you, plus the ferns and the greenery and the richness of the moss. It's so green. It just fills me the rain. It's all, yeah. Very happy place

I would love to hear that part of it which is more passive. And I think for many of us who don't themselves have artistic abilities, they may find it more interesting to use that form of art therapy rather than trying to create art on their own. So would love to hear your perspective on that. Thank you

@arish Everybody can do art. Explore. Emulate. Express. :)

Technically speaking, if we try to define art as a job, what exactly is it, right? It's difficult to describe it because throwing paint on a canvas and it's a job, it's much more deeper than that. And a lot of us have had the bad luck of having people who didn't encourage our individuality when it comes to art. So I would encourage you to give art a try again, no matter what someone made you believe

@Binati_Sheth Thank you!

Hi Benithi. First of all, thank you so much for doing this interview with me. I really enjoyed it and learned so much about all the different techniques that you use for art therapy. As I said, I also enjoyed doodling and dabbling a little bit and I will keep your tips and some things that you have said in mind as well. So thank you so much again for coming on my forecast during the interview, sharing all the great pictures and tips and the drill
