The Pathaan Paradox

article image placeholderUploaded by @aayanisms
And I won't give away any spoilers there are for those who have yet to see the movie. There is a special cameo from a fellow superstar, if you will. And so one often wonders, why is it that this is not a phenomena elsewhere? Are we taking our movies too seriously, cinematically speaking, and missing out on all the fun, the nice caramel popcorn and entertainment? Let me know your thoughts about the Pathan paradox

Hi, Ian. I have not yet seen Patan, I hope, in the next few days, but I'll take your word for the quality and kind of what you're calling out in terms of the paradox. The way I look at it, it's always been especially in Bollywood, for the longest time, there was very little correlation between quality of the movie and winning awards and versus winning actually evening kind of the box office, right? Getting huge collections

People danced along with the songs they hooted. They threw money on the screen. I think it's more about the experience at this point rather than focusing on the quality of these things, the quality of the VFX and the plot, how good the action was. While I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, I know it has its shortcomings. And when it comes to true acting chops, I would give it to movies like Swades or My Name Is Khan, or even Paheli or Fan, for that matter

If you go back if you're Rasinophile and you go back to arguably the dark ages of Indian cinema I e. 1980s through almost till 2000. And of course there were a few good movies, I mean artistically good movies which also did commercially well strewn here and there, but they were a handful

They don't want to go and see a complex plot that they're trying to still figure out once they're out of the theater, which is why Bollywood tends to give them what they want because that's where it fetches them greater numbers and ultimately it is a business. So they're trying to make the best out of it and get as much money as possible. Of course, in doing that, they tend to a lot of times forget that they need to have a plot

Not to belabor the point, but production houses like YRF and Dharma have the necessary budget to invest in topnotch high quality VFX and yet present something of the standards that we have come to see in Hollywood, for example. And so, yes, we might still not have a 200 million dollar budget, but a $70 million budget

Like, nobody within Bollywood is even thinking of this. I mean, Bansali is doing history p***. Like, make do great casting, get cave eight sets and get pretty people to make big eyes and cry on screen. That's not set up one. Is it too much to ask for one cinematic experience? I know this was supposed to be pretan, but it became about so many other things because it's frustrating. We don't see cinema on the big screen at all
